Coffee Tools/Equipment
If you are getting into coffee and just want an idea of things to get you started, here is a list of things you can explore to see what interests you.
Coffee Brewers
AeroPress and Filters – The AeroPress is great for travel because it’s lightweight, durable, and quick to use. It makes a flavorful cup in just a few minutes with very little cleanup. If you want great coffee without carrying a lot of equipment, it’s an excellent choice.
Chemex and Filters – The Chemex is perfect if you enjoy a clean, bright cup of coffee. Its thick paper filters produce a crisp flavor with very little sediment, and the iconic glass design looks beautiful on any countertop.
Cold Brew Maker – I use my cold brew maker all the time, especially during warmer months. One unexpected benefit is how quiet it is. I can make coffee without waking the kids by grinding beans first thing in the morning. If you enjoy smooth, less acidic coffee, it’s a great addition to your kitchen.
Drip Coffee Machine – A drip coffee maker is still one of the easiest ways to brew coffee for a family or office. It’s reliable, makes several cups at once, and requires very little effort. If convenience is your priority, it’s hard to beat.
Espresso – I love espresso drinks, but dialing in shots on traditional machines can take practice. One thing I appreciate about this machine is that it helps simplify the process while still making excellent espresso. It is a little loud, but that’s a tradeoff I’m happy to make for consistently good coffee.
French Press – If you enjoy a rich, full bodied cup of coffee, the French press is hard to beat. Since it doesn’t use paper filters, more of the coffee’s natural oils stay in the cup. It’s simple to use and doesn’t require buying replacement filters.
Kalita Wave and Filters – I have the Kalita Wave and I love it. This design has a flat bottom dripper which helps it to evenly extract. I like this design because it’s consistent and gives you a nice tasting drink.
NitroPress – Nitro coffee is incredibly smooth and creamy, making it easy to drink quickly. Depending on how it’s prepared and served, it can contain quite a bit of caffeine, so it’s worth paying attention to serving size if you’re sensitive to caffeine.
Coffee Accessories
Burr Grinder – A quality burr grinder is one of the biggest upgrades you can make for better coffee. I especially like the anti-static grounds container because it helps reduce mess. The timer took me a little while to get used to, but once I started weighing my beans before grinding, it became very easy to get consistent results.
Coffee Syrup Dispensers – These syrup dispensers are a beautiful way to store your homemade coffee syrups. They look great on the counter and make it easy to add just the right amount into your favorite drinks.
Espresso Distribution Tool – If you’re pulling your own espresso shots, this is one of those tools that makes a noticeable difference. It helps evenly distribute the coffee grounds before tamping, leading to a more consistent extraction.
Espresso Tamper – A quality tamper goes hand in hand with a distribution tool. It compresses the coffee grounds into an even puck, helping you pull better and more consistent espresso shots.
Gooseneck Kettle – I use this all the time when making pour over coffee. The precise spout gives you excellent control over your pour, and the built in temperature display helps you heat the water to the ideal brewing temperature.
Ice Cube Tray – I’m sure you’ve seen these ice cubes all over coffee videos. They are beautiful and fun. Definitely recommend if you are big on iced coffees.
Immersion Blender – Immersion blenders are very nice when you want to quickly mix syrups, sauces, or coffee drinks. It creates less mess than a traditional blender and is easy to clean afterward.
Manual Coffee Grinder – This is a great option if you travel or enjoy making coffee while camping. It’s compact, doesn’t require electricity, and lets you grind fresh coffee almost anywhere.
Mixing Spoons – I really like the extra long handles on these spoons. They’re perfect for stirring tall glasses of iced coffee, cold brew, or lattes without making a mess.
Scale – A coffee scale is one of the best investments you can make for consistent brewing. I love that this one includes a built in timer, making it easy to measure both your coffee-to-water ratio and your brew time for pour over recipes.
Coffee Beans
These are a few coffees I’ve enjoyed and often recommend if you’re looking to try something new. Taste is personal, so think of these as starting points rather than a definitive list.
