Ice drip coffee is one of the easiest ways to make a smooth, refreshing cup of coffee with very little bitterness. Instead of pouring hot water over the grounds, ice slowly melts through the coffee over several hours, creating a gentle extraction that highlights the coffee’s natural sweetness.
While it takes about 9 hours to brew, there’s very little hands on work involved. Simply set it up before bed and wake up to a crisp, ready to drink coffee that’s perfect over ice.
Equipment Needed
Kalita Wave, Hario V60, or Chemex would work for this recipe
Ice Cube Tray
Burr Grinder
Scale
Ingredients
Ice
Ground Coffee
Directions
Wet your paper filter and place it in your pour over brewer.
Grind and measure 30 grams of coffee. A medium to coarse grind works well for this recipe.
Add the coffee grounds to the filter and level the coffee bed.
Carefully place 500 mL of ice on top of the coffee grounds.
Allow the ice to melt naturally, letting the water slowly drip through the coffee. This typically takes about 9 hours, making it a great recipe to prepare overnight.
Once all of the ice has melted, serve the coffee over fresh ice if desired and enjoy.
What to Expect During Brewing
The first drips may take several minutes.

The ice will melt slowly over 8-10 hours.

Brew time depends on room temperature, ice cube size, and your brewer. I used the Kalita Wave, medium ice, and the room temperature was about 70°F.

The coffee should drip steadily but not all at once.

Notes
Brew time will vary depending on the size of your ice cubes, room temperature, and your brewing setup. For me, I had medium sized ice and my home was 70°F.
If you don’t want to wait for the ice to melt, you can slowly pour very cold water over the coffee grounds instead. The flavor will be slightly different, but you’ll still end up with a smooth, refreshing cup.
